My (...) daughter is a big fan of Harry Potter, and usually won't let me read anything to her because she prefers HP instead. This book has broken through that block. We're half way, and I find the book delightful.

Each character is interesting. The predicaments they get into are humorous and bizarre - I never know what to expect next. We live in a suburb of Boston and much of the book is set in places we know - it's so much fun! Imagine a small dragon- like creature in the NECCO wafer factory! Imagine that dragon "negotiating" with the peregrine falcons! It's that kind of detail that leaves me laughing with pleasure.
I enjoyed reading this book, the first I've seen by Downer. I especially enjoyed her take on wizardly societies, and that she drew in myths and creatures from around the world. The gracious and competent Indian sorceress, Dr. Naga, was my favorite character.

On the other hand, I felt Downer brought in so many characters and ideas that she wasn't able to explore any of them deeply. I also felt that some of the material was calculated to appeal to children -- a little too calculated -- and, again, not explored in enough detail to satisfy me. I may get more chances, though, as the possibility of a sequel was obvious in the closing chapters.

The incidents where the little dragon become addicted to chocolate were amusing, but (yet again) I felt Downer missed many opportunities to highlight the foibles of the modern age as seen through the eyes of outsiders.

Do any of you guys reading even know what a wyvern is supposed to be? Well, the whole book is based on that and I didn’t even know what it was. Not that I’m saying the book is bad or anything! I think it is a great book because despite me not knowing what one of the main characters were, I still enjoyed it. I recommend this book to anybody who likes something to do with fantasy (eg. wizards, dragons, and demons).

Theodora is an imaginative girl whose wish one day comes true. Gideon is a wizard with a lost mother wyvern named Wycca. Gideon lives in medieval times. Theodora lives in the modern world like the one you live in. The exposition is when Gideon and Wycca go through the bolt hole and arrive in the modern world. The rising action is when Theodora finds the wyvern card. If you want to know the rest, read the book.
My opinion of the book is that it is exciting, fun, interesting, and magical. Ann Downer shows the setting by saying either there are castles and dragons there. She also explained the modern world by making one of the characters say, “A wyvern scale!” This lets you know that there is no wyvern where they live which is the modern world. This makes me feel joyful because I love magical objects.
I really recommend this book to kids or adults who are into fantasy.
Theodora feels she is old enough to go with her father on his summer research assignment; however, once again she is left at home with her nanny, Mikko. What makes this time even worse than the others is the fact that her friends have all left for the summer, and Theodora has yet to collect the cards to get her into the Wyvernkeeper's Circle. But then Theodora finds a wyvern trump stuck to the bottom of her shoe, and Theodora's summer changes drastically.

In another time and another realm, Gideon is searching for Wycca, his pet wyvern. Much to his chagrin, he realizes that the pregnant Wycca has disappeared through a bolt-hole to another where and when. Gideon must enlist the help of a Harvard professor to help him find the appropriate wyvern-fetching tools in this strange where of Boston in the when of 2002. They must locate Wycca before she falls into evil hands.
Great book. Arrived on time.
