The remote hamlet of Port Cuan nestles on a northern shore at the foot of mighty sea cliffs that shelter it from the ravages of wind, Atlantic waves, and largely from time itself.
When one of its houses comes up for sale, the residents brace themselves for the intrusion of a stranger into their idyllic existence. They discover that the newcomer is Gavin Pendry, once a famous travel writer, and are puzzled as to why he should come to live in such a remote place.
Molly, Port Cuan's self-appointed soothsayer, is convinced he is running away from a dark secret in his past, and her fears seem justified when the new arrival behaves suspiciously by deliberately shunning all contact with his neighbours.
Laura, a local artist, sets out to discover the reason for this, and Gavin finds himself drawn against his will into the eccentric community that is Port Cuan. He soon discovers that his determination to stay aloof is being seriously undermined by his growing feelings for Laura.
Yet, the more Laura gets to know Gavin, the more mystified she is as to why he has come to Port Cuan. When she finally uncovers the answer to the riddle, it causes her so much heartbreak that she wishes she had left things alone.

I suppose it is natural to expect British authors to have a greater command of the English language than other authors. After all, they grew up speaking it and even studied it in school. We Americans on the other hand are only exposed to occasional glimpses of it in such venues as Downton Abby. R. J. Grieve provides a rare opportunity for a total immersion in English experience. The author's book, Port Cuan, does for the mind what a spa does for the body. Beautiful pictures are painted with words on just about every page. The book has interesting characters living interesting lives and you will enjoy them but the descriptions of their world are what make the book so enjoyable. The only downside is that you can not go to Google Maps to click up a street view of Port Cuan. Port Cuan is fiction even though the author has made it seem very real.Product details

Port Cuan edition by RJ Grieve Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Written as a series of vignettes rather than a narrative format, I just couldn't get enthusiastic about it. Well enough written and edited, it just left me cold.
