James Herriot's works are all wonderful to read and the illustrations draw the reader into his books. This particular story I have read to my granddaughter every year since she was very little. Every year brings tears to my eyes.
She is now 10 and asked this year if I would get her a copy of The Christmas Day Kitten for herself. She brought it Christmas Day and read it to my younger granddaughter. We all sat teary eyed at the end of the story... and so a tradition has begun.
This is the story of a stray cat who finds her way into a loving home. Very independent, "Debbie", the cat comes and goes in a home that has two dogs, - all three love to cuddle together by the fireplace. What happens with Debbie and how the story gets its name, is so touching. I can get teary just thinking about the story! Must read for children who love animals.

This book was a family favorite when my boys were young! All of the James Herriot books for children are wonderful!! The text is well written for adults but perfect for younger children. The books are not too long and can be read out loud in less than 10 minutes. Great grammar! Touching story line.
This hard to find book was purchased for my grand daughter. They love it as much as their mother's loved reading the story when they were little.
Now mother and daughters get to repeat the joy of mutually reading the book over and over again, just like we enjoyed reading it to our daughters.
I can't wait to read this to my daughter. I used to love this book.
This is one of our favorite James Herriot books ever. It makes for a lovely Christmas read, something quite different from the usual Christmas stories. And the illustrations in this picture book make it work buying it separately. This year we gave it as a gift to a friend with a young family so they too can enjoy the tradition.
The book is in great condition. Just wish it was the hardcover version with a book jacket.

My mom used to read us the original story at Christmastime when I was a kid. It was first published in Harper's magazine back in the early 80s as I recall. I still have the pages from that magazine that my mother clipped and laminated. The illustrations and the titles of the story vary in the various books, and the Harper's published version, but the substance of the story is the same. It's a Christmas tradition for us.
