A mysterious manor overlooking the cliffs in Cornwall is the setting for Teresa Medeiros's new novel The Temptation of Your Touch. This story has a gothic feel to it and the leads, particularly the hero are well developed and admirable.Maximillian Burke, Lord Dravenwood has always played by the rules, a perfect son, perfect lord and a perfect fiance' and yet he is jilted at the alter; his bride dumping him for his wastrel globe trotting brother. Max becomes a bit of a bad boy but it is not a comfortable fit so he takes off to one of his family's newest land acquisitions, a castle, Cadgwyck Manor, in Cornwall to escape the gossip of the ton.
Max discovers that the local villagers will have very little to do with Cadgwyck Manor because it is said to be haunted by a female ghost with a tragic past. Max is greeted by a motley crew of servants when he arrives at Cadgwyck led by a bossy- no nonsense housekeeper named Mrs. Spencer.
Anne, aka Mrs. Spencer has assembled a rag tag group of people to live in the manor and she loves them all dearly from the senile butler to the young maids escaping the slums of London. The group has always managed to keep former masters away from the castle due to the manor's less than clean condition and their terrible service, but Lord Dravenwood proves to be difficult despite their best efforts.
At first I wondered if I would like Anne, who is quick to say "no man will be my master." I thought, "Oh, she's one of those heroines, prickly, stubborn and paints every man as a scoundrel." Well, Anne is a bit like that(at times she can be too obstinate) but she is also kind and she truly loves people as evidenced by the way she has immense patience with those around her. The reader can see she is much more than she seems and even though she can be stubborn she is also insightful when it comes to Max.
Max is intrigued by his home and the servants. The sad story of the past occupant who roams the castle as the White Lady of Cadgwyck is a mystery he dearly wants to solve and he is certainly not afraid of a ghost. Max is truly heroic, risking his life for others several times in this novel.
Even though there is the mystery of the ghost and the unproductive servants, this story is ultimately about the power of forgiveness. Both characters struggle with forgiving themselves for their mistakes, their past weighs them down and both have a difficult time seeing a future filled with joy and love.
I really enjoyed this novel. The pacing is good with nice twists throughout the story to keep it from being too predictable and Max is a marvelous hero, he is faithful and self sacrificing. This earns 4.5 stars.

What can I say? If you've ever read one of Teresa Medeiros' books you'll know what I mean. It's not only the romance which makes her books so great but also the wonderful characters, the witty dialogue and the great stories. Her secondary characters are just as vital and deep as her main characters. "The Temptation of Your Touch" is no exception!
The hero is the older Burke brother, Maximillian Burke, Earl of Dravenwood. If you've read "The Pleasure of Your Kiss" you'll remember him. After losing the woman who he has loved for most of his life he decides to leave society. What better way of doing that, than to seclude himself at a far off manor at the edge of a cliff reputed to be haunted and staffed with a motley crew of servents.
Anne Spencer is the housekeeper of Cadgwyck Manor. She not only takes care of the manor itself but also its staff which consists of a crazy old butler, a cook whose sole occupation it seems is to knit, a footman who is a boy more interested in wildlife than working in the house, a maid who hardly does anything except whine and read all day and five other maids all named Elizabeth! Needless to say with so many colorful characters, you can hardly expect to be bored.
As if all this wasn't enough, the manor has it's very own ghost, Angelica Cadgwyck. "The Lady in White". All the former owners of the manor have come to unfortunate ends, but Maximillian is determined to stay. There are too many other things in his life that are haunting him.
This book has it all! A beautiful ghost with a tragic story, an Earl who has become disreputable, a housekeeper who seems to have her own secrets and a love story which unfolds despite all this.
Don't miss the Burke Brothers' series!!!!
Maximillian Burke, Earl of Dravenwood and heir to a dukedom, finally stopped being cordial after being left at the altar by the woman he's loved for most of his life, who had in turn married his younger brother. Ever a danger to himself and others, Max decides his dark moods would be better endured in his most remote holding, Cadgwyck Manor. Nothing, however, would have prepared him for this crumbling, haunted (literally and figuratively) place, meeting his soul mate in a seemingly ironclad housekeeper, almost getting killed twice, and an infatuation with a ghost - Angelica Cadgwyck.
Anne Spencer, housekeeper of Cadgwyck Manor, has a good reason to chase out this new master. Before Max arrived, she had already prepared her bevy of servants to displease him, all the while using the ghost legend to drive him out. After all, the previous owners have either fled in horror or met untimely deaths, so how hard could this one be?
Anne and Max are both wonderfully complex characters who have their own ghosts to chase, yet find themselves inexplicably drawn to each other. I greatly sympathize with Max, who has been unable to accept the loss of his fiancee for a long time and could not stop the feelings of destruction within him. Anne tries to repent for her past mistake by erasing all pleasure from her life, giving all the care and comfort to her family of servants. For these two, finding a forgiveness in each other and a light to replace past hurts became their guiding love.
Teresa Medeiros's lyrical prose and superb description of scenery details fully captures the wild beauty of a haunted castle by the cliffs, adding a flavor of intrigue, suspense, and ultimately love, to Max and Anne's adventures. As the characters get to know each other, the hidden truth comes out of the past to a tumbling and happy conclusion for the couple. The only issue I have with this is in the rather abrupt ending, where there were several unresolved issues that would have been crucial given Max's circumstances, and his laconic explanation of his love. However, this would not deter any reader from enjoying this wonderfully crafted story, and I highly recommend all gothic lovers to try this book.
