The Academy Tales of the Marketplace continues the brilliant saga of resolute slaves and exacting owners begun in previous volumes (The Marketplace. The Slave, and The Trainer). A dynamic culture of honor and duty embracing absolute servitude is the basis for the clandestine society known as The Marketplace. Sensuality, intelligence, and passion meld into exquisite eroticism and scenes of blazing sexuality.
In "The Academy" we follow Chris Parker and his trainee, Michael LaGuardia, to Japan, where a conclave of trainers is taking place. While the trainers swap cautionary tales and debate protocol, though, moves are being made that may change the Marketplace, and Chris's place in it, forever. This complete, full-length novel is a rich tapestry of sexuality and emotion, augmented by the inclusion of short stories by guest authors Karen Taylor, Cecilia Tan, Michael Hernandez, david stein, and Christian Muncy.
The ebook edition includes a brand new bonus story, "Inside Straight".

There is something seductive in being led through a story, especially one like this one with pathways branching off from the primary journey. The subtle changes in rhythm and voice could have been a distraction, but instead added color and dimension to an already rich storyline. If you like erotic fictionin the D/s M/s genre, this series is a must read and this book in particular is a masterful work.

The Academy The Marketplace Series Book 4 edition by Laura Antoniou Cecilia Tan Karen Taylor Michael Hernandez david stein Christian Muncy Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Well developed characters and interesting plot. Love the M/s dynamic.and the difference in training or not styles. The author is well versed, and it shows.
I really enjoy this series. The writing has gotten consistently stronger, and this is no exception. I *loved* the multiple-author format of this one.
Laura Antoniou carries on the main arc of the story herself, while guest authors provide interesting snippets and snapshots mixed in. We'll be reading about protocol and leather philosophy, and the book will smoothly switch over to a guest author writing about how that philosophy might work in the "real world". We also learn more about the most fascinating character in the series, Chris Parker.
A great deal of the protocols I was trained in with my former partner were inspired by and adapted from these books, and reading them always brings up a strong sense of nostalgia and remembered joy. One of the things that I like about reading them again now, years after that relationship, is that I can reevaluate a lot of my own opinions about protocol and slavery. I've had a couple of moments, earlier in the series, where I had to grit my teeth at what came across as "One Twue Way"ism, but a lot of that has eased in this book. It's thought-provoking, and has led to many discussions with my partner.
The interplay and conflict between the closest thing the series has to the Old Guard style of service and the newer, softer form of slavery is fascinating and absolutely in keeping with the arguments kinksters have every single day. It is clear that Antoniou has a strong preference for one over the other, but I'll let you figure out which. It was a little dated, in that they're still talking about the internet as a totally new thing, rather than the ubiquitous presence it was when it was first written, in the year 2000.
As I said before, this is by far the strongest book in the series. Antoniou's writing style has dramatically improved, and it's always a delight to learn more about favorite characters. I'm still reading it, and I already know I'm going to value it above the others. Wonderful book.
Yet another fantastic book. I have enthusiastically recommended this series to all my friends interested in BDSM, and I am really hoping for more from this series I never want to end. Loved the stories by these other authors and how they were used within the book as a whole.
Can't recommend this series highly enough. Laura is very knowledgeable and brings us into a story that's believable and hot.
This book was full of surprises fun, intense and engaging.
"The Academy" has the distinction of being the first book in novelogy format that I've had the pleasure of reading. I was pretty sure that I'd find the format jarring, but somehow it worked. (Maybe it was all the sex that kept me interested!) As the plot follows Chris Parker from the first 3 novels, and cheeky Michael LaGuardia from The Trainer to a Marketplace training convention of sorts in Okinawa, Laura Antoniou weaves short stories from several amazing authors into the narrative. "Whatever happened to Matson, that spotter we haven't seen in years?" a character might ask. And of course, someone will launch into his tale ("Bullseye," written by Cecilia Tan, shares the cautionary tale of the disgraces spotter.)
Not surprisingly, the book continues in the incredibly erotic, passionate, and highly literate style to which readers of Antoniou's books have become accustomed. This time, though, we get to be treated to the guests in her sandbox too. M. Christian's "The Tiger in the Dining Room" is charming and endearing. Karen Taylor's "The Nurse", my favourite short story included in the book, makes me cry every time I read it. (her other three stories in the anthology are pretty delightful as well, especially "Alex's Choice," though I admit to a prejudice for that one since Rachel is my favourite character in the series.) "Redemption" ,by Michael Hernandez, is a guilty pleasure to enjoy. "In Service" by david stein is guaranteed to make you smile. And of course, the anecdotes written by Antoniou herself are guaranteed to be frustratingly arousing.
I'm not sure if I can pick a favourite of the Marketplace novels, but this one is definitely one of the runners-up. Woth picking up in ebook format, too, for the amusing bonus story "Inside Straight."
My rating 5/5 dashing Canadian sled dogs.
I love all of the characters. She makes you feel like you're there with them. Feeling what they feel. Desiring what they want. You root for them and you want to be them. I couldn't put it down.
