If you haven't read award winning novelist Rebecca Cantrell's Hannah Vogel series, you are missing out on an exceptional literary experience. This 4 book series (with much anticipated hints of more to come) takes place in the early 1930s and chronicles the hardships and atrocities that the people of Germany experience during Hitler's rise to power. Rebecca is a master at writing the backstory to a person or place. Living in Berlin, she was able to visit and research many of the places that still exist that appear in these books. Starting with A Trace of Smoke, crime reporter Hannah Vogel discovers a photograph of her gay transvestite brother posted in the Hall of Unnamed Dead at the police department. Investigating Ernst's death, Hannah uncovers the seedy underbelly of his cabaret lifestyle. She also encounters a five year old boy, Anton, who claims that Ernst is his father and that she, Hannah, is his mother. On her search for Ernst's murderer, Hannah delves into the unsavory lifestyle of the Nazi Party. Hannah learns that Ernst is Anton's father, but it is not her brother. It is Ernst Rohm, the head of the Nazis' SA.Second in the series is Night of Long Knives, which involves the return of Hannah and Anton to Germany after 3 years of self-imposed exile. Anton is kidnapped when their Zeppelin is diverted from Switzerland to Germany and Hannah must search for him, even at the risk of her own death. With Hitler's orders to execute Rohm and his storm troopers, Hannah loses her chance to locate Anton. Hannah enlists the aid of her friends to help locate her son before the Nazis do, as the Gestapo closes in.
Third in the series is A Game of Lies, Hannah returns to cover the 1936 Berlin Olympics, as a journalist for a Swiss paper. She is also here as a part time spy. She is smuggling Nazi secrets out of Germany collected by her lover, Lars Lang, a member of the SS.
Fourth in the series is A City of Broken a Glass. Hannah is now in Poland covering the story of 12,000 deported Polish Jews. One deportee is the pregnant wife of her Jewish friend, Paul. Kidnapped by the SS, Hannah is taken back to Germany. During a rescue attempt by Lars and Anton, all three get trapped in Berlin. As they devise a means of escape just days before Kristalinacht (the Night of Broken Glass), Hannah must also search for her friends daughter, Ruth.
Reading this 4 series of books has cumulated into the most exhilarating and informative journey I have been on in a long while. These books were superbly researched. With a combination of real and fictional locations and people, the reader experiences a taste of Berlin that is mesmerizing. You need to read these books. They will send you on a journey you will never forget.

A Trace of Smoke Hannah Vogel Novels Rebecca Cantrell 9780765320445 Books Reviews
Rebecca Cantrell and James Rollins, working together, have produced two great thrillers. While waiting for the third installment, I decided to check out her solo books. She writes one book series set in Nazi Germany and another set in tunnels under New York. "A Trace of Smoke" begins the Germany series.
You can see the "smoke" world in the 1930 movie, "The Blue Angel", starring Marlene Dietrich as the cabaret singer Lola Lola. It is also background in the movie, "Cabaret". Pre-Hitler Berlin was famous for decadent cabarets where every morally reprehensible act or thought was viewed as accepted lifestyle. Cantrell's heroine is a newspaper reporter who covers the crime beat and has already seen everything.
Hannah's brother makes his living as a female singer in a gay-oriented cabaret. After his murder, she learns he had clients among the higher-up Nazis. Then, a child claiming to be his son pops up at her door. She deals with it and the story is a page-turner you can't put down. Get ready for surprises.
I read this first narrative of Hannah Vogel in the heart of Weimar - soon to be Nazi - Germany and found it interesting enough to read all her Vogel books one after the other. Her strengths great evocation of place and period, a strong, difficult, committed heroine, good characters. Her weakness - Hannah herself can be infuriating, and has more lives than a cat, considering the stubborn risks she continues to run, placing herself and everyone around at (needless?) risk in confronting the Nazi horror. Secondly, we spend altogether too much time on her love life, which given the background and possibilities of the series, began to irk me severely. For that reason, I give it only four stars. Still, a fine introduction to the period and its horrors.
It's been a long time since I was unable to put a book down even for a second until I finished it. (And I read hundreds of books every year!)
Honestly, I had not been expecting this much - I love reading mysteries set in different countries around the world, as well as different historical periods, and, since I'll be traveling to Germany this summer, in the process of loading my with books for the trip, I googled mysteries set in Germany. Rebecca Cantrell's series was listed among them, so I bought the first book. Yesterday, at lunch, to take a break from work, I decided to just take a peek at the first page to see if the book would be any good and if I should get an more in the series. Well, 59 minutes later, I was back at my desk and could not wait to get back to it. As soon as work was over, I headed back home with my book... only to find that the power had gone out. Not to worry, I had plenty of candles and a booklight! I figured I'd read another chapter or two and get on with my evening. Next thing I knew, I had finished the book, and realized that 1) It was 3am and I really should get to bed 2) I hadn't had dinner or done pretty much anything else all night and 3) I must immediately get the rest of the books in the series.
Cantrell draws you in as much with the story, as with her writing - it's atmospheric, meticulously researched with highly developed complex characters. I highly recommend this book for lovers of mystery, historical fiction, and just good books. (Meanwhile, I'm excited to read the next few - I'm not sure if any of them will actually make it with me on my trip to Germany - I'll probably finish them before then!)
